About the University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota is one of the most comprehensive public universities in the United States and ranks among the most prestigious. It is both the state land-grant university, with a strong tradition of education and public service, and the state’s primary research university, with faculty of national and international reputation. Coffman Memorial Union, on the Minneapolis campus offers a place to relax between classes, grab a quick bite to eat, take a break in Goldy’s game room, see a (free) movie, or browse the University bookstore. A lovely park and a series of paths alongside the Mississippi River are on the south side of Coffman. On the north side, Coffman is connected by pedestrian bridges to the Northrop Mall and Plaza, a spot for noon summer concerts.

The University Recreation Center houses two fitness centers, 14 handball and racquetball courts, five international squash courts, two gymnasiums, steam room, sauna, and locker rooms. The adjacent Aquatic Center is also open to students, staff, and faculty, and lap swimming is offered seven days a week.

The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, was completed in 1993 and is an active center for displaying artwork and for live performances, lectures and other cultural activities. When you are at the museum, pick up a Public Art on Campus brochure at the information desk and as you walk around campus keep your eyes open for the outdoor sculptures. Look for the Wolves and Moose, Predator and Prey located in front of the Bell Museum of Natural History, Platonic Figure located between Electrical Engineering and Lind Hall and, on the St. Paul campus, you’ll find brass sculptures of oversized bulls contently sitting on the lawn across the street from Haecker Hall.
